Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the nominated incoming Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, has outlined a policy agenda aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of the rail transport sector. His proposals focus on increasing investment, improving connectivity, and promoting multimodal transport solutions.
A key component of Tzitzikostas’ strategy is the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, which aims to scale up and prioritise investments in transport decarbonisation solutions. He plans to develop an EU industrial action plan for the automotive sector and a new industrial maritime strategy to maintain the competitive edge of the industrial ecosystem. Additionally, Tzitzikostas intends to present a dedicated plan to connect EU capitals and large cities by high-speed rail, including night trains, to further support modal shift and promote cross-border travel.
