EU Commission Amends Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rules for Offshore Ships

Brussels — The European Commission has announced a significant amendment to Regulation (EU) 2015/757, which governs the monitoring, reporting, and verification of greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport. The new rules, set to take effect from 1 January 2025, will include offshore ships in the scope of the regulation, aiming to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective manner.

The amendment, published on 16 October 2024, clarifies the term “offshore ships” to ensure uniform application across member states. This includes vessels designed or certified to perform service activities offshore or at offshore installations, such as anchor-handling tug supply vessels, offshore supply ships, and floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units.
