In a recent debate, the European Parliament emphasised the vital role of cities and regions in advancing the EU’s green and digital goals. Members of Parliament (MEPs) discussed cohesion policy as a critical tool for fostering local development, reducing inequalities, and supporting regional responses to climate and social challenges. Key points included addressing urban-rural disparities, empowering local governments, and ensuring cities and regions have the resources and autonomy needed to promote sustainable growth.
Commission’s Stance on Local Empowerment
Didier Reynders, speaking for the European Commission, affirmed the Commission’s dedication to positioning cities and regions as central players in Europe’s transformation. He highlighted that GDP per capita in new EU Member States has increased to 80% of the EU average since 2004, thanks largely to targeted cohesion funding. However, Reynders acknowledged ongoing challenges in rural and economically disadvantaged areas, where economic opportunities and access to essential services often lag.
Reynders noted that cohesion policy investments from 2014 to 2027 are projected to increase EU GDP by 0.9% by 2030. He underscored that “cohesion funding is essential to ensuring green and digital transitions reach every EU citizen” while also highlighting the need for further investment to address imbalances, particularly for regions at risk of being left behind.
