Shipowners and Environmentalists Urge EU to Back Clean Fuels in Industrial Strategy

BRUSSELS—European shipowners and the green transport lobby group Transport & Environment (T&E) have urged EU policymakers to prioritise clean fuel production for shipping in the bloc’s upcoming Clean Industrial Deal.

In a joint statement released today, the groups argued that the success of the shipping industry’s decarbonisation efforts hinges on the EU’s support for a European clean fuels supply chain. Citing the Draghi Report, they estimated that the energy transition of shipping will require €40bn in annual investments between 2031 and 2050.

The intervention comes as the European Commission prepares to unveil its Clean Industrial Deal within the first 100 days of its new mandate. The deal is seen as a critical opportunity to bolster Europe’s industrial capacity while supporting the green transition of high-emission sectors such as shipping.
